Softwaremaker has a nice article on the ''Making sense of the new Event-Based Asynchronous Programming Model in ASMX .NET v2.0" - actually, this is really not limited to ASMX, it can be found throughout the whole .NET Fx 2.0 and is commonly referred to as BackgroundWorker-based programming model. Windows Forms, ADO,NET, ... also use it extensively.
