Well, since the start of this, I have attempted a few patches, IE re-installs, system recovery, XP service packs etc and so on.
Still no luck. IE refuses to respond to anything. I have had 8 different versions of ntdll.dll lying on the system, none being updated with any of the attempts made.

Curiously, IE works when logging into a different account!
Time to copy profiles over and move stuff. Luckily, experience has told me avoid using My Documents and other profile specific directories.
