Plasma and DLP technologies are all the rave for home theater televisions these days. But, if you really want to get the best in home theater for years to come, you probably want to wait for LCD. Here's an article that talks about why LCD will pass plasma as the buyer's choice in the near future.

Sure, LCD is currently very expensive and does not offer the largest of screen sizes. But those issues should be history within the next 12 months (the huge price reduction is primarily based on an increase in the number of LCD raw material manufacturers). LCD has all but eliminated the earlier technical issues with high refresh rates that kept gamers away from LCD panels for their computers.

However, the biggest reasons I see that you'll want to wait 12 months to drop your hard earned cash are:

1. Overall LCD screen quality is better than plasma
2. LCD has a longer life (50,000 hours versus 30,000 for plasma)
3. Plasma is notorious for screen burn-in
4. Plasma TVs have a high defect rate across the manufacturer board
5. LCDs weigh less than their plasma counterparts of the same size
6. LCD response times will break the 5ms barrier sometime this year

And if you're thinking of hooking up that big screen to your Windows Media Center PC, you'll want LCD. Personally, I run my PC gaming rig on a Sony SDM-M81B 18" LCD display - and it works great!
