Here is an article I did a while ago on ASP.NET Authentication.  It discusses using one-way hashes rather than encrypting the password, or worse, storing a password in clear text.  Just as important, I discuss why it might be important to securely hide your user's passwords even if you use a username and password simply for personalization.
