Architecture Rules – The Integrated Architecture Framework for Enterprise Systems Development
Architecture is the description and visualisation of the way IT supports the business. It links the vision, strategy and IT feasibility, focusing on usability, durability and effectiveness. Architecture enables the construction of a solution or implementation of a vision, by defining principles, rules, standards and guidelines, and eventually, high-level specifications. It is a structured mechanism to manage the complexity of all elements including people, process, technology, systems and business units, all of which have to work together, thus reducing the risk on complex projects/programmes and delivering added value. It also provides an effective way to engage with the business at all levels, and manage uncertainty. This talk will describe CGE&Y's Integrated Architecture Framework for understanding, managing and realizing these needs in the context of enterprise systems development.

Session 1
Message-Oriented Distributed Systems: Motivations and Impact of a New Business Imperative
This talk discusses the business imperative, technical motivations and benefits of moving from today’s tightly coupled distributed systems towards a more open, loosely coupled service oriented architecture. The talk highlights the key architectural differences between message-based interaction and remote-procedure call style interaction common encountered in the pre-Web services generation of distributed (object-) technologies. The main architectural challenges are discussed, including long-running transactional interactions, distributed authentication and asynchronous processing. Most importantly, this talk is not about a future intangible technology but will show you how to start the transition towards messaging-based solutions today. It will provide actionable guidance on how to architect systems and choose technologies built on the current Microsoft® Windows platform so you will be ready to benefit from the next wave of communications technology built on Microsoft’s Indigo Web services platform.

Session 2
Smart Client Architecture
Rich UI applications combined with direct connection to live data can highly augment the user experience. Applications allowing users to interact with enterprise systems independently from network availability can greatly increase productivity. However in the corporate space, web browser centric applications are often chosen to allow easy deployment. In this session, we'll give an overview of the support for building these applications with Microsoft tools and technologies as well as patterns that can be used to support this approach.
Bill O'Brien, Architect, Microsoft Ireland

Session 3
Irish Case study
A large Irish organisation will describe their technology landscape, the architectural approach they are taking to their enterprise systems, and its implementation in .NET

Session 4
Aligning Design, Development and Operational Constraints in Building Complex IT Systems
How do we work from business requirements to running code when stakeholders span the entire organization? Today, design, development and operation activities are often performed by distinctive teams, resulting almost automatically in large "disconnects" among these 3 main activities in software development. This session will have a look at some specific tools such as codename "whitehorse" and initiatives such as the "dynamic systems initiative" which highly increase the alignment between design, development and operations.
