The Oakland A's finally decided to poney up the dough and re-sign one of their last premier position players, Eric Chavez, to a 6 year $66M extension (relatively cheap by today's standards). Remember, the A's are the only team not to re-sign AL MVPs in 2 of 3 consecutive years (Giambi & Tejada) - a very dubious distinction in my book.

Losing Chavez would have probably signalled the end to the Big-3 of Hudson, Zito & Mulder since they all agreed that they would not want to stay on a team that continually loses their best position players. "Great pitching can only get you so far - you need to score runs to win" was the quote from Barry Zito during the offseason, when the re-signing of Chavez was still in question.
