I was going to the doctor's office and decided to take my iPod with me. I charged it the evening before, and slipped it into my jacket pocket. By the time I got to the doctor's office, the iPod was completely dead. Then I brought it home, and it wouldn't even charge - or connect to my iBook.
Anyway, I looked up in the Apple Support KBs, and found this way to reset the iPod without taking the cover off, which voids the warranty (keep in mind these instructions are not for the iPod mini):
1. Plug in the iPod to the charger
2. Toggle to Hold switch from Off to On and back to Off
3. Press both the Play/Pause & Menu buttons at the same time (for about 10 seconds)
This process will reset your settings to the factory defaults, but won't delete data (songs, playlists, etc). Click here to go to Apple KB information on how to reset your iPod (both models).
