So how can Tiger Woods still be the #1 golfer in the world? He hasn't won a major in over a year, and continues to play sparingly. When he does play, he's pretty much in the top 30, but not a lot of wins to show for it. Meanwhile, you've got Vijay Singh with a streak of 12 consecutive top-10 finishes. You had Kenny Perry winning a bunch of tournaments in a row last year. You had Ernie Els blistering start at the beginning of the golf season - winning everything in his wake. Then there are the winners of the 4 majors last year. You can make a case for any of these golfers being the CURRENT #1 golfer in the world - because they're playing the best golf in the world NOW.

So, I was talking with my Dad this week and he explained to me the reason the #1 ranking still belongs to Woods is that it is computed as a 3 year rolling window of tournaments. So, basically he's #1 because he played so well 3 years ago.

Now, I agree you need a rolling window to prevent the #1 ranking from changing from week to week. But why is it 3 years? It should be 3-4 months at most. That way you really know who is the world's #1 golfer NOW - and not a few years ago.
