I've seen a lot of discussions on the newsgroups about how to do ASP.NET authentication and registration. There's a good article on MSDN on how to use Whidbey to building a custom registration and login control. The article "demonstrates how you can create a single control that provides both user registration and authentication using ASP.NET Forms Authentication". A good read.
