For a long time, "lain, serial experiments" was my favorite Japanese animation series.
This has changed last weekend when I saw the first seven episodes of Haibane Renmei,
which roughly translates into "Alliance of the charcoal feathers".
Yoshitoshi Abe does a great job in telling the story of Rakka, a girl who finds herself
without memories and "transformed" into a "Haibane", an angelic creature, complete
with charcoal wings and a freshly baked (!) halo. The story is neither action-packed
nor fast-paced, but a very subtle tale of Rakka's life and it's mysteries in the beautiful
town of Glie.
