The other night, I GAD mentioned to me it was possible to send authenticated email via System.Web.Mail.

For whatever reason, I was always under the assumption this was not possible.

Today, I was directed to super .NET email guru Dave Wanta's new site, http://SystemWebMail.com (also creator of 123aspx.com). What is even cooler is Dave is producer of a great commercial product which obviously completes with System.Web.Mail.
