Yes pop-ups are hitting us in full force, but another type of advertising is gaining popularity - and this one can suck your bandwidth dry. I was browsing ESPN the other day, when an embedded Pontiac DIV was shown inside the web page I was reading. Not only was it an advertisement, it also included streaming video of a college game play (promoting their "Pontiac Excitement" slogan).

Anyway, we've all seen the annoying JavaScript bleed-over windows with screwy graphics that annoy us. But, at least they have some sort of Close icon that we can quickly click to get it off the screen. What pissed me off about this was that there was no Close icon. Only an icon to shut off the damn sound. Well that's great, but I don't want to download your streaming movie commercial in the first place!

I can see the next generation of web filters. Like pop-up blockers, we'll now need to start developing add-ins that look for this kind of crap and ask if we want it displayed or just dropped from the rendering. I guess I could look at this as a product opportunity, but right now it pisses me off more.
