Wow, 9:30AM on a Sunday and I have already coded up some new stuff, shipped it off by 8:30, read the NY Times over cofee and now back here. Did I mention it was Sunday morning? Before I sound like a Marines commercial, here's what's going on.
Of course, the big news of the week is the introduction of iTunes for Windows. Several people have commented on whether it is a good looking or useful UI or not but that misses the point. In my eyes, iTunes is all about the store. In a world where the record companies are suing file sharers, it was Jobs and iTunes that got record companies together to make a viable service work. It has been quite successful with between 10-20 million songs sold. To me, it has worked. I have bought more music in the last 2 months than I did in the last 12 months, because it's literally one button click for me.
Other big news of the week is the availability of Firebird 0.7. Firebird replaced IE as my default browser months ago. It is everything IE isn't.
I frequently encounter people who ask me about whether they need VSIP to do something in VS.NET or they can get by using the Automation object model. My general answer is that you don't want to bite off the VSIP monster unless you really have to. Its narly to say the least and most of what you really want to do you can accomplish with the automation model. Craig Skibo has some great information on a little known ability to go from your automation code into VSIP and back. This will save you a ton of work, check it out!
