This ZDNet article talks about a possiblity that VMWare is going to make one of its virtualization product free. I remember beta testing the first version of VMWare and being very excited. I even went so far as to buy one of the low cost hobbyist versions that they had at that time.

But then the hobbist version dissappeard, and the cost kept going up. Then MS came out with Virtual PC, so I just shifted to VPC (I was anyway getting it as a part of my MSDN subscription). Now with the free version (if it does come out), I suppose VMWare is trying to get back in the race.

What would Microsoft do now??
