I haven’t had much time to read lately, between the holidays, travel, and more work than normal, this is one area of my life that has suffered.
Disgrace is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The story is not only brilliant and heartbreaking, but the authors writing style is incredible as well. The story is about a professor in South Africa, who after getting kicked out of his school, moves to live with his daughter in the country-side. More than that the story is about the the juxtaposition of the races in the new South Africa.
I picked up the The Killer Inside Me from a local book store after I saw it sitting next to some of my favorite books. The book is quite interesting just from the fact that it’s a story of a serial killer and is told from the first person, but even more than that Jim Thompson is a great writer and truly captures a twisted mind. I look forward to picking up more of his books, I think he is truly under-appreciated (The local B&N doesn't even have his books) and often labeled with “mystery” instead of literature.
My mom picked me up a copy of Double Play, its a mystery tale centered around a bodyguard hired to protect Jackie Robinson. Unfortunately the story doesn't quite live up to the expectations set by such a cool plot idea. The book was decent, but pales in comparison to most of what I have been reading lately. It has prompted me to look for a good biography on Jackie Robinson though, let me know if you have read one you liked.
Cash: The Autobiography is the most recent of the books I have read. It has been sitting on my bookshelf for sometime, but after watching Walk the Line I was in the mood to finally read it. It is less of a comprehensive tale and more of a collection of various stories told by Cash himself. It is a great book with lots of unique stories, but I am still looking for a more comprehensive biography of one of the only country singers I have ever liked.
