From the syndication point of view, maybe the problem isn't personal politics, but who in general is participating. By my account (and I could be wrong here. I stopped following recently), the process seems to be guided by blog tool creators and end users. While this group is important, they are not the people who must ultimately use the syndication.
From a blogging tool creator point of view, I would much rather have Greg, Dare, and Luke (plus the folks at Newzcralwer, FeedDemon, FeedSter, etc) tell me how I can format the data my tool generates in a way that end users get a better experience.
This is not to say the end user should not have say. There are other uses for Atom/Echo/Rss beyond pure blog reading, however, at the moment, I would bet a vast majority of RSS usage is simply for reading.
