I never thought it could become reality, but last saturday was the day I made the switch to the Mac. Not finally, but mainly. I will still keep and use my Linux workstation for development and other things, where I might find it useful and appropriate to have a higher resolution and a bigger screen for example.
Anyway. The last weekend was a tremendous one because I bought myself a new (my first) iBook. It runs the latest version of Mac OS X, as you can see for yourself in the larger version of the screenshot.
Although I already own an Apple Macintosh computer, this one is very special to me. First, because it's actually my first laptop computer. And secondly, because this iBook is the first brand new Apple computer I'm (also currently) holding in my hands.
The machine runs a stock Mac OS X 10.3.5 installation. I found it not to be necessary to reinstall the whole system after I got it, unlike Windows. Concerning available, free, useful and therefore installable software, task to find the appropriate solutions wasn't a tricky one. Pretty helpful regarding this matter, were the two posts, written by Sterling Hughes: Mac OSX "Cool Software" and OS X Battery Life Optimization. Especially the latter helped, after applying, to boost the battery lifetime on an average working stage up to nearly 7(!), I repeat it SEVEN hours. That's really amazing.
Other needful programs I installed include MySQL, PHP, Firefox, Thunderbird, Fire and the like. A whole nice and colorful bunch of cool applications, now running freshly and happily ever after on my new iBook.
I will recently post updates about things going on here, wirelessly.
