I occasionally think I'm a scientist and start asking questions.  I know for a fact that I am naive, but I still can't help but ask.  If you are a scientist and you are reading this then please try to set me straight.

I was reading this article on yahoo about transporting an atom (which really they were talking about entangling two atoms together) and I don't think I understand.  I have read about entangled atoms in a few of the various books I've read and magazines I subscribe to, but what I don't understand is why we aren't applying them to technology.

Why don't we use some entangled atoms to send up with the mars robots?  That way we can change the state of the atom on one end to send a message in an instant instead of waiting for radio waves to get there in 20 minutes?  Do these atoms loose their entanglement for some reason?  Does entanglement only work in very specific conditions?

PS:  Patent pending on the instant communications idea.
