The purpose of the side switch on the iPad 2 is to enable you to immediately apply an action to your device. You can set the side switch to quick lock the screen orientation or to mute the audio sound. You can only apply one functionality to the side switch.

To assign screen orientation lock:

1. Go the Home screen.

2. Then tap on Settings.

3. Tap on General.

4. Select Use the Side Switch....

5. Finally tap on Lock Rotation.

To assign audio mute:

1. Go the Home screen.

2. Then tap on Settings.

3. Tap on General.

4. Select Use the Side Switch....

5. Finally tap Mute.

Now you can use the side switch to quickly lock the screen orientation or to mute an audio noise.
