To save some power on the iPad 2 you could turn off the notifications feature. This feature is enabled by default to allow alerts send new information to you. Each individual app may have the ability to send notification even when they are not running. Here's how:

1. Go to the Home Screen.

2. Select Settings.

3. Then select Notifications.

4. Finally switch it to the Off position.
