I like Ruby. A lot. For me, Ruby is kind of like "Revenge of the Smalltalk Nerds". I don't have any strong feelings about Rails, but the couple of times I played with it, I chafed. I don't like PHP. At all. Period. And -- I think syntax is quite important, much more so than most people in this business.
That said, Derek Sivers' post is deeply sensible. I don't know Derek, and have no knowledge or opinion of him beyond this post, but I agree -- it's you and me, dude, far more than the language.
