the www. subdomain often used on websites was often required to access a website, however, in todays world it isn't (except for the odd website). obviously if your website uses the www.example.com and example.com domains then search engine wise you will suffer. this is because your website is effectively at two different address and it means a search engine may see them as two different websites.
