37signals Everyone loves a campfire. The warmth is alluring, your friends or family gather around for intimate conversation, contemplating the glowing embers and entertained by the sparkshow. Maybe it's a caveman thing.

But what if your crew is scattered all over the planet? Last night, Nick, myself, and other members of the Digital Web team got together to give the latest offering from 37signals a try. Campfire is a multi-user IM/chat system designed for exactly this kind of situation. Along with sharing ideas, links and other normal text content, you can upload and instantly share files. Image files are automatically thumbnailed for preview. To download a file, just click on it. Conversations can be secured with SSL and rooms can be "locked" for private conversations. Less sensitive conversations are logged, so you can go back later and search for a bit of information if you need to. In fact, every conversation can be accessed from a URL, just like a blog post or any other Web page.

The Campfire user-interface is simple and intuitive, and like the rest of the products from 37signals, it's built with Ruby on Rails (RoR) technology. At Digital Web, we've been using Basecamp for project management and it really is an effective tool. If I had any complaint about Campfire, I would prefer to see it rolled into Basecamp as a feature rather than a stand alone app. At least for premium level accounts.

Go ahead and give Campfire a try, it's free for up to 4 simultaneous users.
