Does design matter? Of course. Do first impressions count? Likewise. Have you ever heard of something called "cognitive bias?" Unless you're a psychologist, probably not.
People enjoy being right, so continuing to use a website that gave a good first impression helps to 'prove' to themselves that they made a good initial decision.
According to a recent study published by Behavior and Information Technology, a typical user will give your site the thumbs up (or down) within 50 milliseconds of the page loading. Which should also give you some idea of just how important speed is to the success of a site.
