I went "up nort" this past weekend, and visited my folks at the lake house, along with one sister and her family. Much food and beer was consumed. In addition, our new neighbors (my parents sold the lot across the street) got themselves a class B fireworks license, a few 3-inch tubes, and about 70 "real" fireworks, which they fired off. It was cool. :)

In other news, my nephew (now 13) is getting sharper by the year. He _almost_ beat me in chess twice. My niece (now 7) is a fun little bundle of energy. Well, she's always been a bundle of energy, but the tantrums are (mostly) gone.

I then headed out to Detroit for a few days of gaming. We had 1 bad game of Italia that we never finished. It's basically Britannia with too much chrome added, and too many major invasions. We also played 3 games of Wilderness War. I won all 3 games as the French largely as a result of some terrible British die rolling and/or card drawing. We also tried Fury of Dracula, which was fun, but frustrating, in that we were never able to hunt down Dracula. I'll have to try it again sometime. We also started a game of The Civil War that we plan on continuing online at some point.

On the way home on the plane, off to our right a couple of miles, I saw one of the most impressive lightning displays I have ever seen. We're talking 5-10 flashes per second. It was appropriate for this week I think. :)
