Feed Description: Obie Fernandez talks about life as a technologist, mostly as ramblings about software development and consulting. Nowadays it's pretty much all about Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
I had the pleasure of chatting it up with a friendly seat neighbor on the flight home tonight. She's a 27 year-old mortgage processor working in Jacksonville. At one point during the flight she pulled out a shiny, new, Vista-powered notebook, which got us talking about technology. Turns out she's net-savvy and a big fan of sites such as MySpace (248 friends!) and Facebook. I asked her if she watches a lot of YouTube videos during the day, and she unintentionally gave me a bit of a Web 2.0 reality-check: Her employer blocks access to YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook, among other sites, for over 2000 employees. Holy crap! I mean, it makes an awful sort of sense, but is that kind of heavy-handed IT policy widespread? As far as I know, the main avenue to the Internet for a lot of normal folks is still at the office, so if people are being blocked en-masse from Web 2.0 sites, it would seem to put a bit of a damper on things.
