Since joining corkd I've tried three red wines (a merlot, a pinot and a cabernet) and one white wine (a chardonnay). For the reds, I've been sticking to the $20 range, while the chardonnay was a modest $14.
What I've learned so far:
Red wine appears to have some positive medicinal qualities that became apparent almost immediately, which I won't share because they fall into the "TMI" category. Email me offline if you're dying to know.
White wine is generally less expensive from what I gather. Almost all of the white wine at the store is under $20, while the reds vary from $5 to $150.
White wine does not appear to have the same (or any) medicinal benefits, for me anyway.
I've decided that I don't really like chardonnay. I think it's the result of too much cheap chardonnay on New Year's Eve parties over the years.
