Here's an interesting journal post from use perl. I'm not surprised, really. Hell, my Linux laptop has had more freezes caused by cpu-sucking apps (mostly Yast) in the last six months than my Windows XP laptop in the last two years. Should I mention the bizarre DNS (and other) issues I hit with Linux laptop sometimes?
Same laptop, btw. Dual boot configuration. One can only imagine what happens on the server side of the house. Or, instead of imagining, just read scrottie's entry.
His comments on Solaris are interesting. It's probably the best of the Unix flavors out there now from a security and stability point of view afaik, but they're not free and Sun is a pain in the ass to work with from what I hear.
Maybe, just maybe, the whole macro kernel architecture is flawed. Maybe it's time we stopped trying to make the all-in-one-client-server-home desktop-multi-media-station-blah-blah-all-things-to-all-people operating system. Maybe the future of the server market is OpenVMS. Maybe it's a micro kernel.
Maybe it's BeOS Server! Ok, I can dream, can't I?
I don't know, but I can relate. I feel like...we're all missing something. Like the next big thing in operating systems just...never happened. And now, we're all just spinning our wheels, hoping something better comes along, but it never really does.
