This weekend was RailsConf 2006. So many earnest talks, so much going on. Some favorite stuff:

  1. I liked watching the Rails messageboard evolve. My bow to the anonymous manga. Real lady. Respect.
  2. Glad to be 12 of 39. PC people are a humble and persecuted people. Yes, we must endure longer boot times. But we sense our extinction and we’ve pledged to use this precious time to breed.
  3. my_attire.replace: :”ceci n’est pas un string” and, believe me, I would do what Jesus did. (In other words: not get the joke right away until Sebastian explained it. Hehe!)
  4. I want a Martin Fowler puppet. Since I can’t have the real Martin Fowler. Sorry to keep you up so late, Martin! (And Deb, Joey, Obie, friends.)
  5. Lots of adoration for NekoVM (and HaXe, as well.) I had thought it was just kind of a fringe thing, but Robert Feldt is actually working on a Ruby framework called Ruccola and we should see some code late summer? Rich went off on this like it was the pure, unbreaded Scientology.
  6. My first time hacking with Rubyists right there outta the same floor socket. Zed and Rick and I got the mongrel_upload_progress plugin cleaned up. For being the straightest arrow in our quiver, Zed sure seems to be surprisingly okay with the rest of us.
  7. During Paul Graham’s talk, one of the Cups (Oliver Mooradian) was laughing and just like saying, “Wow,” and, “Oh, that’s awesome.” These outsider ideals transcend coding. But it’s really cool that we get to live them.
  8. Mucca Pazza’s costumes and formations are paralyzing. People of the future will fill their uniforms with pinned accolades at the close of a number.
  9. I hate my black laptop for resisting defacement. All the smart folks have silver down there.
  10. Ogijun and Shugo Maeda brought me a crisp copy of the handheld Takahashi Method! THE BIG. I treasure it.

For my part, I got to be tacky and directionless and inept. I truly apologize to anyone who really wanted substance. Isn’t Leonie just a freak of magic clay?? Good work to the Cups, they’re good friends, wonderful people that just enjoy at all times.

I really value Rubyists. Recently, a Python friend on IRC told me that he had a hard time getting his software noticed among Pythonists. In fact, most of his traffic came from Rubyists who were kind of interested in what he was doing. I think Pythonistas lack the togetherness and are alot more disconnected. I could be wrong, but I don’t think everyone has this kind of neighborhood.

Rubyists are all over each other’s projects, though. So much collaboration and patching. Even informal code snippets posted on random blogs get reshaped and improved and rehacked over time. It’s a good moment in time. It won’t last forever, but I’ll bet we can keep it going for another five years at least. Maybe longer?
