Feed Description: DB2 on Rails is a blog maintained by the IBM team working on DB2 enablement for Ruby on Rails.
Well DB2 on Rails is finally at the RailsConf 2006. The start of this week was our preparation for the confernece that IBM is actually sponsoring. DB2 on Rails is a debutant in the Ruby on Rails world and RailsConf is its coming out party of sorts. Naturally we are all a bit nervous.
The team was supper busy burning 600 CDs and getting some shirts done. After all, if we are going to introduce the world to DB2 on Rails we must do it in style. Natasha (our web designer) got shirts done in a couple of days. This must be a record of sorts. Burning 600 CDs was not a huge chore, except the blanks that we ordered did not arrive so I had to beg and borrow (but not steal).
I got an an airplane to fly to Chicago and as you would expect got delayed due to weather in Chicago. Does Chicago ever have good weather for flying? I am yet to land and take off at O'Hare on time and I fly though here a lot.
OK, I am now at Wyndham Hotel, the site of RailsConf 2006 conference. The conference. I put the 600 CDs out on the table for everybody registering to pick up and got to interact with people picking up the trinkets, t-shirts etc. So what are the comments when people see DB2 on Rails CDs? Well in general quite positive. I heard a few "DB2 on Rails ... way cool!". I also heard "DB2 on Rails ... I guess I will take one". Thee was also one that went like this: "DB2 on Rails ... I can't imagine what I would do with that" but because it was only one I am not at all disappointed. Overall, I am quite happy that we are here and have a chance to introduce DB2 as a completely free database with vendor developed Ruby on Rails support. DB2 is the only database out there that has vendor (IBM) developed driver and adapter. A free database with a large vendor backing it for Ruby on Rails. I think this speaks to Ruby on Rails getting ready to play a role in an enterprise setting.
Speaking of Ruby on Rails "getting ready" ... Next to the DB2 on Rails CDs there were stacks of Linux Journal, July 2006 issue. The cover is taken completely by the picture of David Heinemeier Hanson (creator of Rails) and the entire issue is pretty much dedicated to Ruby and Rails.
