Feed Description: JVoorhis is a Rubyist in northeast Ohio. He rambles about Ruby on Rails, development practices, other frameworks such as Django, and on other days he is just full of snark.
Last night, myself and my fifteen traveling companions on the Argon Express arrived at Union Station in Chicago, IL for RailsConf. If you missed out on the fun, our journey was documented on Robby’s blog, starting here, and on Flickr, here.
I feel fortunate to have shared the experience with such great company, and when I wasn’t exploring selections of Bertrand Russell’s The Conquest of Happiness or A. N. Whitehead’s Adventures in Ideas, I had some great technical and personal discussions with a talented bunch from very different backgrounds.
Impromptu hackfests also began and ended constantly. David Goodlad and Steven Baker brought RSpec a few steps closer towards proper Rails integration. Rails contractor and disco god Chris Anderson also wrote a Ruby wrapper library for LAME, the open source mp3 encoder. If we had been feeling any less exhausted, there would have been an asset compiler extension for creating audio tasks. Maybe in a week or so.
Last night, I had the pleasure of experiencing Chicago’s famed Giordano’s Pizza
(I couldn’t finish two slices) as well as bum around downtown Chicago. I also got to meet several famed members of the Ruby community as well as some friends I made in Vancouver at Canada on Rails. With any luck, I’ll have the opportunity to recuperate so I can be chipper enough to attend the many talks I am looking forward to hearing, as well as deliver mine to the best of my ability.
Also, since I am borrowing an analog (film!) camera for the conference, I will be posting my photos sometime next week.
