* It's quick. You can play a scenario in under 2 hours. * You have relatively few units, and a simple combat system. * Hits, instead of being tracked with chits as in SPQR, are tracked by simply removing blocks from a formation. * They've got different kinds of units, including ranged units, and leaders, who can be very important.
The bad:
* Card driven tactics just don't work well IMO, especially when there are a handful of cards in the deck that can really make or break the battle (e.g. 'clash of shields'). If they had just stuck to fundamental cards (flank left, center attack, etc) it probably would have worked better. * No rally/morale, except through a few cards. * Beyond the specialty cards, the battle just doesn't flow right when using card based movement.
I guess you just kinda have to take it for what it is - a lighter, fluffier version of SPQR. After this I was inspired to break out SPQR again and I'll probably reread the rules again this weekend.
