Feed Description: Obie Fernandez talks about life as a technologist, mostly as ramblings about software development and consulting. Nowadays it's pretty much all about Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
I know you guys will get your feathers ruffled here. But I have NEVER
installed a Microsoft product or SDK without some sort of side-effects.
When I installed some C# tools (back a couple of years ago), it dorked
up my automatic OS updates....when I talked to someone at Microsoft,
they said yeah, I needed to remove this registry entry, uninstall this
and that, reinstall such and such (including the .NET). My biggest
complaint about MS has been the subtle coupling with the OS (or that
there is code that says "if Kelly, screw up computer..."). So, while it
may be the best thing since sliced bread....I still get the shivers at
installing anything Microsoft (except the OS when I am reformating!)
And I don't think I am that gun-shy considering I have built 7
computers from scratch and installed the Chinese and Spanish version of
NT4 and Microsoft office.
I just found it a nice change that the Ruby on Rails worked immediately
(took all of 10 minutes with a gabby 3.5 year old in my lap)...and
interestingly enough, I didn't need a 3 course programming solution on
my laptop right then :-) Don't know about other current installs, but I
am happy with the LACK of coupling and side-effects with my server and
my laptop while playing with Ruby.
