Feed Description: Obie Fernandez talks about life as a technologist, mostly as ramblings about software development and consulting. Nowadays it's pretty much all about Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
My little team is wrapping up a project this week and transitioning our Java and Rails code over to in-house developers (a great bunch of guys, I have to admit). A little while ago I caught some of their lighthearted conversation booming over the cube walls, having to do with Rails I think... keep in mind these guys have a large and successful ASP.NET app that they wrote and maintain.
"We never *just* insert a record in a table! One record in the weight table, and oooh, I dunno 150 in supporting tables!"
I just had to blog about it because it's an expression of the realities of life in corporate IT. Complicated technology drives complicated solutions. Part of what I find so fun about teaching Rails to guys used to legacy codebases is their thrill for achievable simplicity and elegance.
Another choice quote, this one from yesterday and hopefully a little horrifying to some of the more snooty people in our industry...
