After a little more than 2 months of silence in this place (well, this place, not our place, there’s still that baby “issue” :)) I’m hereby pushing a little life into it again.
Where have I been?
Above and beyond my little EuroOSCON excursion I’ve been working on rewriting the software behind the German city portal network eins.de.
The development itself was pure Rails joy, just like what they say in the movies. However, deployment was a nightmare. Not the software configuration part (which has been nicely covered in the meantime in essays written by James Duncan Davidson here and here). The obnoxios “scaling” part was horrid.
I’m planning to cover this part in a little more detail in a retrospective essay dealing with our journey and the problems we faced. Only that much: You want Linux 2.6. You want memcached. You want to compile your own Ruby. You absolutely don’t want components.
A month since launch has passed and we’re currently pushing about a million pages a day at 15 Mbit/s. The hidden gems (cough) will be uncovered in a bit. Even though I don’t think I found anything really changing how the world of Rails operates.
What all else happened?
The Typo theme contest is long over. It spawned some controversial results from both audience and participants, but all in all it’s been a huge success (as you can see from looking at this site (no, I’m not talking to you, feed readers!)).
Rails 1.0 was finally released. Due to excessive media coverage in all sorts of places I’ll spare you the duplication of the gory details. Still, I’m glad it finally happened.
Christmas 2006 took place. Hope you had a merry one.
Closing off, have a great New Year’s Eve as well as a good start into 2006!
