I think the main thing holding back Ruby right now is the lack of a good IDE.... we really need IntelliJ for Ruby. The inherent productivity of Ruby over Java is very much dampened by the difference in the tools available.... yeah, I know about RDT/RadRails... but if you've ever used IntelliJ you know there is no comparison.
"Very much dampened"? Not really, not for me anyway, but I really do wish JetBrains would come out with a Ruby IDE, or at least a Ruby plugin for IntelliJ similar to their JavaScript plugin.
