I'm still plugging away, trying to get the port of Spreadsheet::WriteExcel 2.x finished. I reached another milestone tonight, hitting the magic file size of 5632, which is the minimum file size for the smallest .xls file generated with this (or the Perl) package. Anything less means I've missed a write operation somewhere. There was lots of side by side GUI debugging involved just to get this far.

The bad news is that it still doesn't work. Now for the joy of comparing octal dumps and trying to figure out, roughly, where I messed up a write operation.

In lieu of POI I'm not really sure if it's worth it to continue this project, though, since POI appears to do both read and write operations, formulas, etc.
