After playing around with Rails for a week, and reading the book on and off, I'm still unsure of how I want to use it. When you program with Rails, you are not just using a code library or an IDE, you are adding your code to a working application with a rich set of conventions. In fact, Rails is basically programming by convention. It may be a very well furnished roach motel, but I still have an aversion to roach motels. I'll keep playing with it for a while, before commiting to anything serious. I have to admit that I've never liked frameworks. They give me a sense of too little control. On the other hand, I think Rails could be used as a traditional database, with a different pattern of usage. I can't deny the level of enthusiasm it has generated.
