I've been trying to figure out where Ruby might go in the future. There is little doubt that both Ruby and Rails have attracted plenty of attention from experienced web developers. I'm also wondering if there may be new programmers getting started with web development. I have a feeling that we are entering a period similar to the early 1980s when there was a huge need for applications development. MIS departments couldn't handle the load and grass-roots applications were developed with dBASE and Basic. The recent emergence of APIs on many sites, the growth of easily readable RSS feeds, and a sprinkling of Javascript for GUIness and you have a perfect environment for mass development of web apps. Will Ruby be one of the major components of this new era of development? The language is well suited for it, but one thing it needs is better documentation for new programmers. I don't mean for the language itself. There are actually some very well written programming tutorials available for free. What is missing is tutorials on getting started with web development for someone who has never done this. There is also a clear anti-Windows bias among writers of installation guides for Ruby libraries. I'm going to be planning out some ideas for such a tutorial and I'll present it here when I'm ready to get started.
