You can search (albeit in a limited way) the on-line copy of the first edition of Programming Ruby (AKA The Pick-Axe Book) using a simple URL format:

http://ruby-doc.org/find/pickaxe/String

Some browsers, such as Firefox, allow you to create custom search plug-ins but apparently require a different URL format, one that employs a query string.

So, as of this morning, an additional format is supported:

http://ruby-doc.org/find/pickaxe?search=String
