Yesterday, I attended the first major get together of the the fledgling Chicago Area Ruby Users Group at the site9.com offices in downtown Chicago. It was great to meet so many of the people with whom I have been working via email. DHH was there (because he had just given his Basecamp seminar), as was Chad Fowler, John Long, Ryan Platte, Sam Stephenson, and a lot of other people (more than 25 in total). Sorry I can’t mention everyone by name, but I should say that David Holsclaw (who is helping me start up a Saint Louis Ruby Users Group) was also there.

The discussions were very good. Ian Bicking (of Python fame) was also there and, given that he was surrounded by Ruby enthusiasts, I really appreciated his occasional injection of a Python perspective.

Since DHH was the guest of honor, most of the discussions centered around Rails. Funny thing though, it seemed like every time I had a suggestion for Rails, DHH would say something like “oh yeah, we talked about that last week on IRC, and someone is already working on it” (the Rails train is not showing any sign of slowing down)!

I also suggested that someone write a Rails replacement for meetup.com as part of the Rails Day competition. It seems that this was not a new idea either.

Someone took pictures and as soon as I get a copy, I’ll add them to this post.
