Ted Leung writes that he is doing "commons-based peer production of software, which is an economically justified set of techniques [...] that happens to look at a lot (sic) like what we call 'open source'." He mentions several times that he is paid to work on this stuff; by IBM, for example. "Just simple hard nosed economics."

At this point I shall quote the old economist joke: If you ask two economists about something you'll get three opinions. (Except Google can't give me the definitive reference to this joke. Bad Google. I want ... whatever it is that Google took back!)

Anyways, Joel Spolsky also had something to say about open source and economics.

I wonder which of these brands of economics has the harder nose.
