I meant to mention this last week, but (my excuse for everything lately) I didn't have a chance. Bruce Eckel (author of Thinking in Java) recently did a presentation for the California Digital Library on issues and directions for Java wherein he discusses the current state and future of Java, new features in Java 1.5, and comparisons to other languages.
