A few years ago I hit on the great SICP book (via C++ guru Andrei Alexandrescu, if I remember correctly). The book was good, but the real gift was that I discovered the original lecture videos on the Web. They by the original authors and you cannot beat the 1981 feeling of it. It's not often that you can find a cultural relic you can learn so much from!

In any case, due to my obsession with video and the need to increase the Nerdiness/GB factor of my vPod (which I drastically decreased by purchasing an Eminem album) I converted the video to iPod-compativle format and packaged it as an RSS feed for your iTunes enjoyment. Grab the feed here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/SICP.

A note about hosting the vids is in order. Depending on the demand hosting video can hose your server, as Kevin recently found out. Since these lectures had a pretty liberal CC license I went ahead and hosted them on the Internet Archive (their uploading system is a real bitch, BTW. I mean it in a bad way, be ready to restart again and again to upload some 20 files). Then for the heck of it I decided to take some of the load off of them to via the Coral Distribution Network, which is a really cool project. I constructed two link sets: one going straight to the Archive, and the other going through CDN. Then I started wget-ing the files both ways (Actually i wgetted CDN twice, first time to make sure the files have a chance to get cached on some CDN macines). At first the Archive download was winning, but in the end CDN clearly won, albeit by a small margin. interesting result.

So I decided to go with the CDN download option after all.

Enjoy!

Some SICP resources:

  • The SICP book on Amazon (first two reviews by Paul Graham and Peter Norvig, if that tells you anything. They are not just two guys who named websites after themselves ;))
  • crappy online version of the book.
  • the original videos
  • the AdUni videos (which I also plan to rerelease as soon as I redeem them from the RealMedia trab). Canot vouch for the content personally, but considering what AdUni was and the instructor's credentials this should be good.
