mlconnor explains why RFID does not deserve all the attention especially as a replacement for barcodes. He made very nice points favoring barcodes:

-bar codes cost less than a penny to print
-they include the numbers in case the barcode is destroyed
-barcode technology is very reliable and accuracy is nearly 100%
-barcode readers are cheap
-you never get false reads

He also briefly explains where RFID would be more useful.

Hey! make sure you weight all the pros and cons before making huge investments.
