It started with the XmlHTTPRequest used by Googles GMail and their Google Suggest service when searching. Today a product called Lightstreamer appeared on TSS and their demos were quite amazing. Suddenly the world changed their mind regarding Javascript. This scripting langauge has been blasted for some years now, why you might ask? Its because too many shops coded web applications with heavy use of javascript, without too much knowledge in javascript. The end was an application tied to one particular browser and i have seen projects where also the version number of the browser was of some importance.

But you can do it better. Companies like Google and Weswit srl (Lightstreamer) are demonstrating advanced javascript stuff, combined with smart backend systems of course, that are not tied to certain browsers, but are completely cross browser compatible. I remember times, when i was daytrading a bit, where you have to install evil ActiveX or Rich Clients just to see Stock-Quotes in realtime.
