The year ends on a somewhat sour note: The median income for electrotechnology and information technology professionals declined for the first time in 31 years, according to this IEEE-USA Salary & Fringe Benefit Survey.
And this drop of 1.49 percent contrasts with growth in overall U.S. personal income of more than 3 percent in 2003.
IEEE-USA President John Steadman states offshoring as the main reason for putting downward pressure on wages for U.S. high-tech workers. Now this will certainly not encourage smart, young people to look for an career in the electronics and computer industry. We already lost too much tech. knowledge, i.e. how to build LCDs, Plasma TVs, etc.
The U.S. trade deficit continued its record-breaking rise, jumping to an unprecedented $55.5 billion in a single month (October 2004), $16.8 billion of which mark the trade shortfall with China - again, that is just the number for October 2004. This huge trade deficit undercuts domestic manufacturing and destroys jobs here, because the nation is importing products, used to be produced domestically.
Engineers, get off that couch! If you don't want to get involved with organizations like the IEEE, WashTech, or TechsUnite you may at least want to check their sites once in a while.
