the largest java community in brasil is supporting the government in its efforts to provide an open source version of java. this largely driven by the government's intiative to prevent vendor lock-in, along with the desire to promote development.
one of the leading world governments in adopting open source technologies, brasil has widely deployed j2se/j2ee and linux among its ministries, including the military. in the meantime, sun remains commiteed to java certification, interoperability and compatibility, which it cites as its main driver for not open-sourcing java (although java source is freely available), given brasil's presence in the java community, it will be interesting to see what pressure this will add to having sun open-source java.
