If you read between the lines of this
The Register article, you soon realize that despite SUN's pr goofs of FUD
concerning IP claims on Linux and opensource, that SUN has the short term
qualities in UltraSparc to break ahead of the pack.
For one, the
enterprise applications and servers and OS are optimized for both Intel 32
bit systems and the UltraSparc 64 bit systems including java, j2ee app
servers, OSes such as Linux and Solaris, and the Orion app stack. Thus if
SUN's pr department will concentrate on the value of UltraSparc + Orion
stack vs Intel64 bit systems as spending less for the enterprise customer,
you will see a rebound in Sun server sales and service support contracts
later this year.
Itanic systems still require all apps to be tuned
for this new way of working on Intel 64 bit systems and these app are not
fully out in the market place as of yet. SUN pr should be striking at
these trends with actual facts about the value of UltraSparc + Orion
stack. Whether SUN Pr department will get this right remains to be seen at
some future date this year.
