There is some confusion in the markteplace and devlopment concerning JVMs on PDAs. There is the Waba approach which is to do a subset of Java and do closed extensions to the underlying PDA OS.

Then there is the Esmertec/Isignia approach which is to transition from Personal Java as in former versions of Jeode to full J2ME via the PDA profiles. So which way will win out?

There is an economic trend of choosing lower price Java enabled smart phone pda/handset combinations over PDAs that continues to blast the PDA industry. Thus. any strrategy that ties the underlying OS features with a JVM is going to backfire as it my abe SymbianSO that wins out here instead of PalmOS.

The other economic factor is how soon before Mobile Operators start subsidizing the Mobile device price of smart phones and handsets to gain more customers? The mor epositive an increase in customers the better outlook on how fast they can transition from say 2.5G to 3.0G to 3.5G within their networks.

I should mention that SUN could help in reducing confusion by releasing the ARM processor version of the J2ME RI for PDAs. It would serve to reduce the costs to market of JVMs on PDDAs in the first place.
